Ashram

A 'spiritual' school, the tradition of which goes back many thousands of years to ancient times.

 

Brahma

The Hindu name for the aspect of God which is creative and creates.

 

Chakra

A 'wheel' or spinning 'vortex' that absorbs energy, powering all living beings. Humans have 7 main chakra's.

 

Datta

The Guru of Gurus, Master or Masters that represents the Truth for what it really is.

 

Dhyan

Meditation or concentration.

 

Guru

Literally 'Gu' means darkness, 'Ru' means light, Guru means that which is able to illuminate the darkness with light, a Master who is able to show the way to Enlightenment is an example

 

Hari

is the love, the power and the driving force of creation. Its is God’s love, the fire that burns away ignorance.

 

Jai

means rejoicing, joy and victory of the highest respect, reverence and adoration

 

Maharishi

A 'rishi' is a 'seer', one who sees the Truth, 'Maha' is great - MahaRishi, Great Seer

 

Mantra

A group of sounds, grouped together and normally chanted. A mantra is said to contain latent energy which the user can perceive through regular practice.

 

Om

the eternal substance of the Universe. Everything that exists is born, is sustained and then merges back into its origin. Om represents these three states, and the state that lies beyond them – the origin.

 

Sadhana

Spiritual practice performed in the quest for the Truth.

 

Sahaj

Literally translated means spontaneous.

 

Sanskrit

An ancient language originating from what is now India.

 

Sat

means Truth and existence, the Truth without qualification, The Universal Truth and the absolute reality of pure existence.

 

Shiva

The Hindu name for the aspect of God which destroys creation, after preserving it, making way for a new creation

 

Tat

is the universal consciousness, it is not thinking or thought, but the principle that allows thinking and thought to happen. Thinking is like the writing, Tat is like the paper it is written on, without the paper, there can be no writing

 

Vishnu

The Hindu name for the aspect of God which preserves creation, after creating it.

 

Yoga

Literally means 'Union', the science of uniting the individual should with the Cosmic Spirit.

 

Yogi

A practitioner of Yoga, one who lives in union and harmony with the Cosmic Spirit

 

Yogini

A woman yogi.
